Final Push: Urge your legislators to support key housing bills!
We're in the final stretch of the 2026 Legislative Session. Three of Neighbors Welcome's priority bills are making their way through each chamber. Now is the time to let your legislators know you support these bills and urge them to move them forward!
The three bills are:
"Faith-Based Affordable Housing" allows faith-based institutions in Rhode Island to fulfill their mission and meet community needs by building affordable housing. This bill would remove barriers and make it easier for affordable homes to be built.
This Bill Will:
-
Allow faith-based institutions to build affordable housing with property they own
-
Creates a streamlined approval process for affordable housing development on faith-based institutional land
-
Aligns with the state and federal low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) rules and regulations
"Technical Fixes" will improve past-year legislation by addressing minor uncertainties or omissions.
This Bill Will:
-
Clarify provisions of the accessory dwelling unit (ADU) law to address loopholes and implementation challenges
-
Remove barriers to encourage reinvestment in residential properties across multiple lots
-
Spell out how last year’s single-family townhomes bill interacts with local regulations, making implementation easier for cities and towns
"Conversion Incentive" will help repurpose underutilized or vacant buildings into new homes, revitalizing neighborhoods and creating high-quality construction jobs in the process.
This Bill Will:
-
Help convert vacant offices, former schools, and former nursing homes into new homes
-
Incentivize projects that prioritize housing for health and education workers
-
Create good-paying construction jobs and leverage union pension funds
