Time to Repeal LEOBR
Within a few weeks the the Police Reform and Accountability Workgroup in the Maryland House of Delegates will decide whether to recommend repeal of the Law Enforcement Officers Bill of Rights. Maryland was the first state to pass LEOBR.
Codified in 1972:
- LEOBR grants police officers rights and protections that ordinary citizens do not have.
- LEOBR limits the discipline police chiefs can impose.
- Because of LEOBR restrictions, police officers are often able to remain on the payroll and on the streets even after repeated egregious examples of misbehavior, racism, or outright brutality.
Maryland can no longer allow police and everyday citizens to live by different rules. We are therefore asking you to join our letter campaign. Just click start writing (at right). You will then be able to email your Delegate a request to repeal LEOBR.
If you do not live in a district represented on the Workgroup, we ask you to forward this campaign to any progressives or others sympathetic to the problem of excessive police force who do.
