Demand Congress Pledge to Uphold the Midterm Election Results

The American people decide who represents them in Congress. Every member must publicly commit to honoring that decision before Election Day. After Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election, we must demand clear commitments from the officials who will face pressure to go along with another attack on our votes.

Now, Representatives Josh Gottheimer and Don Bacon are circulating a bipartisan pledge asking House members to accept state-certified winners and oppose efforts to prevent or delay duly elected members from being seated. The effort comes amid concerns about interference with the transfer of congressional power if Republicans lose their majority.

That pledge deserves the public support of every member of Congress. Representatives should sign the letter. Senators should publicly endorse its commitments and pledge to uphold certified election results in their own chamber. Party affiliation provides no excuse for withholding that commitment.

Refusing to seat an election winner would attack the rights of everyone who voted to send that person to Congress. Our communities deserve representatives who will defend their voice, uphold their oath, and reject pressure from Trump or any party leader to subvert the outcome.

The time to demand answers is before the election. A public commitment now allows constituents to know where their members stand and hold them accountable for what they do when the results arrive. Congress must hear that voters expect every certified winner to be able to take office without partisan obstruction.
