Tell Albany City Council to vote NO on ALPR surveillance in Albany.

This coming Tuesday, September 8th, Albany City Council will vote on whether to enter into a five year contract with Motorola Solutions for 24 new ALPR cameras. While we are glad that our representatives have listened to our concerns about Flock Safety, we want to stress that Motorola Solutions’ ALPR cameras (known as Vigilant) are no safer for our community.

Just last week, the ACLU published an article warning the public about the risks associated with Flock's ALPR competitors, including Vigilant. These cameras will pose the same risk of data leaks and illegal sharing that we have seen in countless California cities. Despite claiming compliance with state and federal laws, Motorola has already facilitated illegal data sharing from multiple California jurisdictions with close to 200 out-of-state and federal agencies including Border Patrol.

It is imperative that we do not let a change in brand name distract us from the dangers that all ALPRs and any mass surveillance system poses for our community.
