The CDC's announcement that it would end the illegal and inhumane Title 42 policy by May 23 was a hard-fought win in our fight to restore the human and legal right to seek asylum at our borders. But unfortunately, Title 42 continues to expel people seeking safety after a federal judge blocked the CDC from ending the policy in May.

The Trump administration saw the COVID-19 pandemic as the perfect excuse to dismantle our asylum system and prevent families and individuals from seeking safety at our southern border. Since then, the Title 42 policy has resulted in over 1.8 million expulsions of vulnerable individuals who have been deprived of their right to seek refuge at the U.S. southern border. In addition, the policy has disproportionately harmed Black, Indigenous, and LGTBQ+ migrants, who face a heightened risk of violence and discrimination when forced to return to Mexico or their home country.

Public health experts, including senior CDC experts, have repeatedly confirmed that Title 42 lacks any public health rationale. As a result, the U.S. has the tools to welcome asylum seekers safely, just as we've welcomed tourists, shoppers, and other travelers.

Despite this reality, lawmakers are attempting to override the CDC and public health experts by passing legislation in Congress that would continue Title 42 expulsions indefinitely. Keeping Title 42 in place would undermine the U.S. longstanding legal commitment to protect refugees and asylum seekers.

Take action: Tell Congress to reject the anti-immigrant Title 42 policy.
