California has spoken. Now it’s time for Governor Newsom to act.

AB 2599 has successfully passed the California Legislature, marking a major victory in the ongoing effort to advance truth, accountability, and repair for Black Californians. The bill is on Governor Newsom’s desk, where his signature can turn this important legislation into law.

AB 2599 recognizes a fundamental principle: the public has a right to know the truth about how institutions benefited from slavery and its enduring legacy. Disclosure alone cannot repair generations of harm, but truth is a necessary foundation for meaningful repair.

California has positioned itself as a national leader on reparations, including through the historic work of the California Reparations Task Force. Signing AB 2599 is an opportunity for Governor Newsom to continue that leadership and demonstrate that California’s commitments to reparations will be followed by action
