Urge Your Legislators to Support Investments in Public Education

Now that the House and Senate have each passed a FY2026 budget, a legislative conference committee will reconcile the differences between the versions. The House and Senate have each also passed versions of a supplemental budget to appropriate surplus revenue from the Fair Share Amendment and that conference committee process is also underway. Each proposal includes funding and policies that resulted from your incredible advocacy, particularly in recent months. For a detailed analysis of what is included in each of these four proposals, please visit the MTA’s state budget page.

Some important items, such as increased Chapter 70 minimum aid at $150 per student, have been addressed by both the House and Senate, meaning that they will be included in the final budget. However, the House and Senate proposals also differ in other key funding and policy areas that will now be debated through the conference committee process. This includes, for example, a House proposal to create a new, one-time opportunity to enroll in RetirementPlus that was not adopted in the Senate, and a Senate proposal to evaluate the local contribution-side of our school funding system that was not adopted by the House.

These and other important differences are why we need you to write to your legislators right away to tell them that we are counting on the House and Senate to include key public education priorities in the final versions of the FY2026 budget and Fair Share supplemental budget. Please also consider calling your representative and senator to follow up on your email. You can find their phone numbers by clicking here.
