URGENT: Farmworkers Need Your Support

Diana Morales

Farmworkers need our support. Our Campesino communities have been enduring the brunt of the pandemic. Farmworkers were forced to carry the weight of feeding an entire nation under unsuitable working conditions, often without health coverage or much support from safety net programs, all the while enduring extreme heat, poor air quality from local fires and battling to stay safe from COVID-19. Because the state failed to provide adequate support, community-based organizations (CBO) stepped in to aid farmworkers.

We have drafted a letter to send to Governor Gavin Newsom and your local state legislator. The letter serves as a reminder to legislators of the 12 demands that emerged from California COVID-19 Farmworker Study.

  1. Comprehensive immigration reform

  2. Dignified and livable salaries

  3. Accessible government-funded safety-net

  4. Access to quality culturally and linguistically appropriate healthcare

  5. Guaranteed and increased units of dignified housing

  6. Achieve language justice with Indigenous Campesinos

  7. More personal, support and resources in Indigenous languages in schools

  8. Access to Internet & essential equipment as a basic right of students

  9. Climate justice policies, to reduce exposure to heat, and smoke from wildfires.

  10. Recognize the professional status and humanity of farmworkers

  11. New occupational health and safety agency dedicated to agricultural workers

  12. Include farmworkers in policy decisions to address problems and promote solutions

THE TIME IS NOW!
