Urgent: Help Fund Crucial Food System Programs

We are at a critical juncture in the future of food access, equity, and sustainability in Massachusetts. The federal political landscape in 2026 is defined by a sharp pivot toward fiscal austerity and "work-first" policies, most notably through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) and subsequent executive actions:

  • SNAP Cuts: State officials share that expanded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) work requirements and tighter eligibility hurdles will cause two million people nationally to
    lose access to SNAP.
  • Medicaid Cuts: State officials share they anticipate $3.5 billion in federal health care reductions as OBBBA cuts take full effect, which threatens Medicaid/MassHealth, with roughly five million people nationally to lose health insurance coverage this year.

As we enter the Massachusetts yearly budget cycle, there are foundational state and local food programs that make up the backbone of the food system in the Commonwealth. Now is the time for the state to protect current food programs in light of the dramatic federal funding cuts.
