URGENT - RDU, Hands OFF Lake Crabtree County Park
The RDU Airport Authority has demonstrated themselves to be poor neighbors to the community of the Triangle. They consistently lease natural public lands for destructive uses and sacrifice the environmental integrity of green spaces they do not own. (They are the managers of the land, while the land is actually deeded to the 4 owning municipalities: Cities of Raleigh & Durham, and the Wake and Durham Counties).
Lake Crabtree County Park is one of the most well-frequented parks in the Triangle by people living in and outside of NC, and it has been for decades. It is ecologically significant, beloved by locals, and used by a variety of biking and running groups. That the elected and appointed officials of the municipalities of NC are willingly relinquishing this public space to private corporate interests is unconscionable.
RDU Airport Authority is destroying Lake Crabtree County Park for private corporations. They intend to lease the land for development into an "entertainment district." We the public still don't even know with which private corporations RDU Airport Authority is doing business. Furthermore, the four owning municipalities of NC are derelict in their duties to protect the land that was in fact deeded to them.
We are demanding the following of the local elected officials representing the 4 owning municipalities, especially with the Wake County Commissioners:
Enforce the R40 residential zoning in order to protect the environmental integrity of Lake Crabtree County Park and prevent its destruction for an "entertainment district."
Empower Wake County to enter a month-to-month lease in order to keep the park if necessary, or buy the park land from RDUAA that was initially invested through federal dollars.
Prevent RDUAA from its own artificial segmentation of the land between Lake Crabtree and I-40. This is RDUAA’s attempt to hide the truth that the federal funds helped built Lake Crabtree. Therefore, the conversion of control of the land should require a vote from each of the 4 owning municipalities.
(NEW) Why don't the four municipalities share the cost to buy Lake Crabtree County Park?
The situation is dire and some people think that this fight is already over, but we still have the chance to rally together and protect one of our most valued public lands in Wake County and the Triangle!
We are also forwarding this to our state legislators and governor to let them know that what RDU Airport Authority and Wake County are doing will set precedence for private corporations to further destroy our public lands!
Every bit of participation is going to count!
