Virginians urge Gov. Spanberger to sign legislation limiting cooperation with ICE

On her first day in office, Governor Spanberger took an important step to protect families by repealing Executive Order 47, which required state cooperation with ICE and encouraged local law enforcement to enter into collaborative agreements with the agency. Repealing this order helped halt a dangerous policy, but stronger protections are still needed to ensure families and communities across Virginia remain safe.

ICE collaboration agreements—such as the 287(g) program and Intergovernmental Service Agreements—fuel racial profiling, separate families, and make our communities less safe. Over the past year, we have seen ICE tactics lead to serious injuries and even loss of life. Continuing to allow local collaboration with an agency whose conduct has caused so much harm puts our communities at risk.

That’s why the General Assembly has taken action. Lawmakers passed HB1441/SB783, legislation that limits state and local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.

Virginia now has the opportunity to move forward with stronger statewide protections that help keep families together and rebuild trust with immigrant communities.

Use this form to urge Governor Spanberger to sign HB1441/SB783 into law and help protect families and communities across Virginia.
