Virginia’s public employees deserve the right to collective bargaining.
Ask the Senate Commerce & Labor Committee to AMEND HB1263 to include higher education employees, then vote YES.
Update: This bill has passed the House of Delegates, but they removed higher education workers from the bill. It may be heard in committee as early as Mon, March 2.
Did you know that Virginia public employees don’t have Collective Bargaining rights?
The General Assembly took it away in 1946, in Jim Crow legislation passed after Black nurses attempted to organize at a state university — at the UVA hospital. Restoring this right will facilitate public employee recruitment and retention, and will help ensure that state employees and the employees of all localities make a living wage and have a voice in their workplaces.
The House passed a bill to restore these rights, but it excludes state college and university employees. The Senate must amend H1263 to include higher education employees, and then pass the amended bill.
