WA State: Protect Trans Girls in Sports!

Three anti-trans policies are on the horizon in WA State.

The WIAA (Washington Interscholastic Activities Association) is meeting April 8th-17th to vote on a slew of amendments, one of which explicitly barring transgender girls from participating in sports. (Amendment ML/HS #21, Rule 18.16.0)

This vote is considered an "advisory vote," because under current State law, trans girls are legally allowed to play sports. HOWEVER, this November, we will see a initiative on our ballots that would change State law to bar trans girls from playing sports by requiring ALL girls in WA schools to either pay for expensive genetic testing OR participate in unclothed bodily exams to prove their sex assigned at birth (IL26-638).

This WIAA vote is an obvious step towards aligning with this ballot initiative. Some background on the WIAA, from their own "Gender Diverse Youth Sport Inclusivity Toolkit" - published on their website in 2024:

"The WIAA was the first state activities association to enact successful policy and practices regarding the equitable inclusion of K-12 transgender students in sports and other activities. WIAA’s groundbreaking policy and its subsequent inclusion in the official WIAA handbook in 2007, served* as a successful model for the rest of the nation." As of 2025, the WIAA estimated there were only 5-10 transgender athletes participating in sports throughout the entire state.

Here's a screenshot from the DEI section of their website, as of 3/13/2026:

Let the WIAA know that we are holding them to their word. Stop targeting trans girls because of the actions of a handful of school districts. Tell them to vote NO on Rule #21, or withdraw the amendment from voting altogether!
