The Wall Street Journal highlighted Union Avenue on October 19, 2026 as a front page story. In 2024, national organization Smart Growth America highlighted it as an example of how to design a dangerous road.

Despite national attention, it appears that very little, if anything, has been done to mitigate the harms of Union Avenue.

Union Avenue has a real effect on public safety and quality of life for Memphians. Share your experience about Union Avenue: do you avoid it? Do you fear it? Have you been involved in a collision? Do you not allow your children to walk or bike near it? It's currently a terrible experience no matter how you get around -- walking, biking, rolling, or driving! We want change, and we're done waiting around for someone else to champion it.
