Why did Canada subsidize Awdah Hathaleen’s Murder? End charitable status for Mizrachi Canada.

Mizrachi Canada, a Canadian registered charity, funds Israeli war crimes. Just Peace Advocates and Dr. Miles Howe have documented their support for illegal settlements, military support, and the blocking humanitarian aid. For example, last year, Just Peace Advocates reported that based on Mizrachi’s 2022 tax filing, that Mizrachi sent at least $644.3 thousand of tax-subsidized funds to 28 Israeli settlements.

Mizrachi also supports Regavim, an organization that surveils and harasses Palestinians and non-Jewish residents in Palestine. In short, they attempt to expel non-Jewish residents through specific legal action. In Canada, Regavim offers tax receipts through Mizrachi via jgives.com. Jgive.com is the donation platform for the Israeli-based organization, ASUR Fund, which is the virtual host to thousands of Israeli registered charities. The illegal nature of this setup was called out by UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, in her report From Economy of Occupation to Economy of Genocide. There, she described the role of a similar platform, Israel Gives: “Since October 2023, platforms such as Israel Gives have enabled tax-deductible crowdfunding in 32 countries for Israeli military units and settlers. United States-based Christian Friends of Israeli Communities, Dutch Christians for Israel and global affiliates, sent over $12.25 million in 2023 to various projects that support colonies, including some that train extremist settlers.”

According to Defund Racism, Regavim “works to expand Jewish control of land across Israel and the Palestinian Occupied Territories by pushing Israeli administrative, judicial, legislative, and military bodies to dispossess Palestinian and other non-Jewish communities of their land.” The group keeps tabs on Palestinian communities' land and infrastructure, including with drones, to pressure the Israeli legal system to demolish ‘illegal’ homes. The Guardian has described Regavim’s “unrelenting campaign to demolish Palestinian homes and villages.” Along with international law and human rights violations, Regavim’s activities include racism and discrimination.

For decades, Regavim has been terrorizing the communities of Masafer Yatta. This is not surprising when considering it was cofounded by Bezalel Smotrich (now Israeli Minister of Finance), who is already sanctioned by Canada. They support extensive demolitions in the area and spew racist propaganda. One of the main perpetrators of this violence is Yinon Levy and his illegal Meitarim Farm outpost. As of February 2024, “approximately 300 Palestinian residents from four communities in the vicinity of the outpost have been forced to leave their homes due to the violence and threats of settlers.”

Then, on July 28, 2025, Yinon Levy murdered Awdah Hathaleen - a beloved husband, father, son, friend, teacher, and civil resister - while defending his community of Umm Al-Khair from an attack by Levy and other settlers. Levy was originally apprehended, but later released and fully freed. Not long after, he returned to continue terrorizing the Umm Al-Khair community.

Regavim has since travelled to Masafer Yatta, explicitly supporting Awdah’s murder by defending Levy’s act as one in self-defense against attacks by “dozens of Arabs and foreign anarchists.” They went on to state, “When you arrive to the field and actually see the reality, you understand the fraud and the strategic importance of a permanent Jewish presence. Knowing the simple historical facts proven and proven in court reveals the lies and lies of an aggressive campaign whose ultimate goal is to establish a dangerous Palestinian terror state. And so we will continue to be there, and tell (and show) the simple facts.”

Regavim is not the only violent settler group Mizrachi funds, nor the only group carrying out war crimes. In 2022 alone, Mizrachi sent funds to at least 28 illegal settlements, in violation of Canadian and international law. Further, Mizrachi sends funds to organizations providing direct military support. For instance, in 2023, Mizrachi sent 200,000 to the Duvdevan Foundation which provides material and financial support to active duty Israeli military members.

Our government should not be supporting and subsidizing the very same people they are sanctioning. Just like the Jewish National Fund Canada (JNFC), the land theft of Palestinians is not a charitable cause, it is a war crime. Just like the JNFC, Mizrachi Canada must be stripped of its ability to declare charitable status and offer tax receipts in exchange for support of ethnic cleansing.

Levy is already sanctioned by Canada. Yet, it continues to facilitate the transfer of funds to further Levy and the ongoing expansion of illegal settlements. How many decades will the Canadian taxpayers subsidize these groups before recognizing this is a crime, not charity?
