Kentucky has long been a home to high standards and innovation when it comes to public education, a place where its citizens can be proud knowing that policy makers and educators work hand in hand to ensure the best for our children.
This year the Kentucky Senate's signature legislation, Senate Bill 1 (SB1), stands to make many significant changes to current education policy in Kentucky. While a number of those changes are positive, there are several proposed changes that stand to harm Kentucky's kids. One such negative change that is being proposed is to eliminate World Language as a stand-alone curriculum, and place it under the broader umbrella of the Arts and Humanities requirement. This would mean that learning a language would no longer be a necessary component in order for students to graduate from Kentucky's high schools college and career ready. In addition, program reviews, including the World Language program review, would be eliminated from the state's accountability model, which would make it easier for schools to cut or eliminate world language courses from their curriculum.
We believe every child deserves a high-quality, rich-curriculum education. Help us protect Kentucky's children from short-sighted policies that would narrow their learning opportunities and undermine our tradition as a leader in offering our students a world class education.
