Advertising that promotes polluting companies is pushing us in the wrong direction. Just when we most need to reduce emissions and restore nature, advertising is locking in demand for environmentally-damaging industries, while hiding their true impacts.

Polluters cannot be trusted to advertise responsibly, and advertising regulation is limited and currently not fit for purpose. Meanwhile ads for SUVs, climate-damaging foods and airlines are everywhere, normalising high-carbon ways of living that we need to rapidly shift away from.

In a speech on June 4th, 2024, UN secretary general Antonio Guterres said: “Many governments restrict or prohibit advertising for products that harm human health – like tobacco... I urge every country to ban advertising from fossil fuel companies.“
