WSU Administrations: Reject Trump's "Loyalty Oath" Compacts

Send this message to WSU Administration:

Together with WSU students, workers, and alumni, I am writing to urge you to pledge to reject the Trump administration's "Loyalty Oath" compact. He wants to decide who can safely attend our schools, what can be taught, and what can be said on campus. In return for a vague promise for preferential access to federal funding, the compact would force our schools to adopt strict limits on international student enrollment, share sensitive student information with the Trump administration, and threaten Wayne State’s very DNA, which is our diversity.

This compact directly undermines our right to academic freedom and goes against every democratic principle our country and our schools should uphold. Around the country universities are stepping up to pledge to block every such governmental over-reach. Will you stand up and say you will sign no such compact?

While we agree with the administration that college tuition costs too much, the solution to the crises of college affordability and student debt is not to acquiesce to authoritarian overreach. Trump's attacks on our universities is an attempt to consolidate power through the capture of higher education. Trump is presenting a false choice between freedom and affordability. The reality is that we can have both.

Universities are a beacon of democracy and free speech in this country. Trump wants to force our schools to bend the knee. He will use our compliance as a green light to force universities across the country into similar agreements. As a university leader with the power to accept or deny Trump's offer, you have an urgent responsibility to stand up against this overreach and be a leader for democracy and freedom in this country.

Our message is simple: Confirm to the WSU community that you will not fold, will not sign, and will not trade away our fundamental rights.
