Republicans in Congress
On Sunday night, May 11, Republicans on the House Energy and Commerce Committee released their latest proposal to cut Medicaid. It's a real doozy. You can read the Politico story on the proposal here, and an article from The Hill on the proposal here.
This proposal would kick 8.6 million low-income Americans off Medicaid, according to an initial estimate from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). It would also cut anywhere from $715 billion to $900 billion from Medicaid over ten years, depending on whether you go with the CBO's estimate ($715 million) or the House Republican estimate ($900 billion). Overall, this would be a cut to the entire program of between 8% and 10%. All these numbers are provided in the articles linked above.
There is no need to get into the weeds and explain exactly how these proposed cuts to Medicaid would work, although the two articles linked above provide that information if you want it. Instead, the bottom line is enough: this proposal from House Republicans would kick 8.6 million low-income Americans off Medicaid in order to partially offset an extension of tax cuts for wealthy Americans. That is just plain wrong.
Now, a proposal from the House Energy and Commerce Committee is still a long way from becoming an actual law. Some Republicans are already vocally opposed to this idea, and we still have time to drum up enough additional opposition to force Republicans to drop this proposal entirely. The first step is just letting the American people know this is even happening, and signing this petition can help–even if only a little–in making that happen.
