Allow cross-pavement EV charging for residents with on-street parking
Hertfordshire County Council
As a St Albans district councillor I have launched a new campaign to push for cross-pavement electric vehicle (EV) charging for residents who rely on on-street parking.
I am inviting residents to sign an open letter to Hertfordshire County Council, highlighting the urgent need for accessible, sustainable, and convenient charging solutions to support the increasing number of EV owners in our community. Many people want to switch to electric vehicles, but without off-street parking, they have no easy way to charge. The council must act to remove this barrier.
Introducing safe methods of cross-pavement EV charging is a crucial step in making electric vehicles accessible to more residents. This initiative not only supports our environmental goals but also enhances the well-being of our community. We strongly urge Hertfordshire County Council to consider this proposal and take meaningful steps toward a greener, more sustainable future.
Please sign the letter to Herts County Council and encourage others to do so!

We, the undersigned, urge you to allow safe and practical cross-pavement electric vehicle (EV) charging for residents who rely on on-street parking.
Many people in Hertfordshire want to switch to EVs, but without a driveway, charging at home is impossible. Other councils have already introduced simple, safe solutions – such as cable protectors or shallow pavement channels – to enable home charging while keeping pavements accessible for all. Hertfordshire must do the same: allow what it considers to be safe and viable solutions.
Why this matters:
1. Better access – Thousands of residents rely on street parking. Without a way to charge at home, they are locked out of the EV transition. Cross-pavement charging would provide a practical solution for those regularly able to park outside their home.
2. Environmental benefits – A lack of charging options forces people to keep using petrol and diesel cars. Supporting home charging will speed up the shift to cleaner transport and cut emissions.
3. Economic boost – More EVs mean greater demand for charging infrastructure, which can create local jobs and drive innovation in green technology.
4. Community support – Residents, environmental groups, and industry experts back this idea, recognising the need for sustainable transport solutions.
We call on Hertfordshire County Council to act now. Safe, simple, and affordable solutions exist. Let’s remove this unnecessary barrier to EV adoption and help residents make the switch to cleaner transport.
