An asylum and migration system rooted in mainstream Labour values

The Rt Hon Keir Starmer MP; the Rt Hon Shabana Mahmood MP

When Labour’s values shine, we transform the country. On migration and asylum, it’s no different.

The public wants a fair and balanced system of migration. A Labour approach rooted in solidarity, community and social justice can deliver that.

We’re calling on the government to ensure that, at the very least, its migration and asylum reforms guarantee the four key principles outlined in the petition below.

A Labour approach to migration and asylum rooted in solidarity, community and social justice can deliver the fair and balanced system of migration that the public wants.

We, the undersigned, call on the government to guarantee the following in its reforms:

1. Fair and reasonable rules: settlement pathways should reflect social as well as fiscal contribution and should not, as proposed, mirror wage inequalities.

2. Fair and reasonable implementation: new settlement rules should not apply to those already on the path to settlement.

3. Supporting integration: reviewing refugee status every 30 months and postponing the right to settlement from 5 to 20 years would breed insecurity and hinder integration, and should not be taken forward.

4. Solidarity with vulnerable groups: children, low-paid workers (many of whom are women) and other vulnerable groups must not be penalised by the reforms.
