Dear Prime Ministers Kishida, Macron, Meloni, Sunak, and Trudeau; Chancellor Scholz; President Biden;
As people from diverse religions around the globe, we are grateful that you are doing more to address climate change.
Yet, as many of the world’s wealthiest countries, your governments are still supporting new fossil fuel projects, domestically and internationally.
These projects accelerate climate-fueled disasters, increase conflict and poverty, and damage the hopes and futures of youth worldwide. Fossil fuels are destroying the livelihoods, homes, and lives of millions of people in countries that have done nothing to create the climate crisis. This is wrong.
As you meet in Hiroshima, a global memorial to peace, we call on you to make peace between people and the planet by:
-Stopping the approval of new coal, oil and gas projects
-Ending subsidies for fossil fuel projects
-Contributing to the Loss and Damage Fund established at COP28
-Funding a just transition to a clean energy future for impacted workers and communities
-Actively supporting a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty
These commitments honor Hiroshima’s legacy and are essential for a peaceful future.
