An Open Letter From KU Alumni Calling for the Resignation of Top Student Senate Executive Officers

Student Body President Jessie Pringle, Student Body Vice President Zach George, and Student Senate Chief of Staff Adam Moon:

We, the undersigned students and alumni of the University of Kansas, have witnessed and experienced racism on campus. Furthermore, we are responsible for advocating for accountability from our elected student leadership and alma mater. Last week’s campus forum made clear that students of color, especially black students, are ignored, alienated, harassed and targets for racially-motivated violence in all corners of the University.

However, your administration obstructs the student body’s call to action to institutionalize a safer, anti-racist environment. You refused to stand in solidarity to Rock Chalk Invisible Hawk’s concrete demands for change and blocked Senate Executive Committee efforts to discuss the campus crisis. Despite knowledge from the beginning of your terms in office of the campus crisis around racialized violence, and your ability to effectuate meaningful change through your leadership positions and access to KU administrators, your administration has failed to take even one proactive step toward change.

The lack of meaningful action, advocacy, and respect in supporting Black students and other students of color gravely threatens the Senate’s mission of maintaining strong connections with student body and KU community, and inhibits its ability to address and develop solutions to facing the student body, including Black students and students of color.

Our Demands as Students and Alumni

We call for your resignation in accordance with the Student Senate Executive Committee’s deadline of 5 PM on Wednesday, November 18th, 2015. Furthermore, we demand that your replacements work collaboratively with Rock Chalk Invisible Hawk organizers, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, and other community partners in fulfilling the fifteen demands presented at the November 11th forum.

Together, we must find solutions now that allow our school to combat racism and better serve the needs of students, staff, and faculty of color. Pursuit of these solutions begins with installation of student leadership who will work to end-- not uphold-- racism on campus.

In solidarity with KU's Black students, students of color, and all underserved communities,

KU Students and Alumni
