Apartheid Free Comox Valley Coalition

Town of Comox, City of Courtenay, Village of Cumberland, Comox Valley Regional District

All people are equal and should be treated with dignity and respect.

But for decades, the Palestinian people have faced Israeli settler colonialism and occupation enforced through racist and discriminatory legal regimes, forced displacement, blockade and movement restrictions, and systematic human rights abuses. According to legal scholars and the international human rights community, this situation constitutes the crime of Apartheid. It must end.

As people of conscience and community members of the Comox Valley, we stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and their call for equal and full rights. Inspired by the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, we want to declare our own communities “Apartheid-Free.”

Let’s build an Apartheid-Free world, starting with our own community: our faith congregations, cities, campuses, and workplaces. We need to educate ourselves and others about racist laws and state systems at home and abroad, and we want to ensure that our communities do not contribute to the maintenance of Apartheid regimes. Together, we can work to promote freedom, justice, and equality for all.

We, the citizens, community members, and organizations of the Comox Valley, unite to build an Apartheid Free Comox Valley grounded in justice, equality, and solidarity with the Palestinian people. We believe our communities must refuse complicity in apartheid and occupation, and take action toward a world rooted in freedom and dignity for all.

We call on local governments, community leaders, unions, faith groups, and organizations across the Comox Valley to endorse the Apartheid Free Communities Pledge [https://apartheid-free.org/pledge/] and commit to the following actions:

1) Support a two-way arms embargo with Israel, in accordance with Canadian and international law, to end the flow of weapons fueling war crimes and occupation. [https://armsembargonow.ca/report]
2) Demand a fair and functional Gaza TRV (Temporary Resident Visa) program that enables family reunification and safe entry for Palestinians displaced by war. [https://amnesty.ca/human-rights-news/joint-letter-gaza-family-reunification-temporary-resident-visa/]
3) Recognize and address Anti-Palestinian Racism as a distinct form of racism within municipal, educational, and organizational equity frameworks. [https://antipalestinianracism.org/]
4) Adopt Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) principles in municipal and organizational procurement and investment policies, consistent with the UN’s findings on corporate complicity in occupation. 5) Join the movement for an Apartheid Free Canada by declaring the Comox Valley an Apartheid Free Community and aligning our institutions with global efforts for Palestinian liberation.

By signing this statement, we affirm our shared responsibility to oppose all forms of apartheid, colonialism, and racism—and to build communities rooted in dignity, justice, and solidarity from the Comox Valley to Palestine.
