Dear Sirs,

I am writing today to ask that you stand behind your promise to rehabilitate and evaluate Bella the beluga for release back into the ocean. Bella has been living alone in her tank since 2019. As a species that lives and thrives in a pod and family dynamic, I believe it is unjust and cruel to keep her isolated and alone. Her tank mates died in 2016 and 2019, and at that time you pledged to release her. Nearly five years later, you have not made any progress towards this goal. Lotte is one of the richest corporations in South Korea and has the financial means to help create a sanctuary for Bella in order for her to be rehabilitated and evaluated for release back into the ocean.

Jo Yak-gol, co-founder of Hot Pink Dolphins has stated that Bella exhibits behavior of stress and boredom due to her solitary confinement. She is often seen spinning in small circles in her tank, or floating listlessly on the surface of the water.

It is time for Lotte to stand behind their commitment to rehabilitate and evaluate Bella for release. She deserves to regain the freedom that was stolen from her.

오늘 제가 이 청원서를 적는 이유는 롯데월드 아쿠아리움이 벨루가 벨라를 야생에 적응시켜 방류하겠다는 약속을 지킬 것을 촉구하기 위해서입니다. 벨라는 2019년부터 수조에서 홀로 지내오고 있습니다. 무리를 지어 생활하며 친밀한 관계에서 살아가는 흰고래 벨라를 이렇게 홀로 수조에서 지내게 하는 것은 부당하며 잔인한 대우라고 생각합니다. 벨라의 동료들은 수족관에서 2016년과 2019년 사망했습니다. 그래서 롯데 측은 벨라를 돌려보내겠다고 약속했습니다. 거의 5년이 지난 지금, 이 약속이 잘 지켜지고 있는지 묻지 않을 수 없습니다. 롯데는 한국 재계 서열 6위에 해당하는 대기업으로서 벨라가 야생의 바다와 같은 환경에서 지낼 수 있도록 방류를 위한 준비를 하고 평가를 거쳐 돌려보낼 수 있는 재정적 능력이 충분합니다.

해양환경단체 핫핑크돌핀스에 따르면 벨라가 롯데월드 수조에서 홀로 지내면서 스트레스와 지루함에 따른 이상행동을 보이기도 합니다. 수조에서 조그만 원을 그리며 게속 뱅글뱅글 돌거나 때로는 생기 없이 수면 위에 가만히 떠있습니다.

이제 롯데는 벨루가를 방류하겠다는 약속을 지킬 시간이 되었습니다. 벨라가 잃어버린 자유를 되찾을 수 있도록 해주시기 바랍니다.
