Stand with our Jeffco Educators and Call on our District to Postpone In-Person Learning

Dr. Jason Glass, Superintendent and chief learner, Jefferson County School District; Jefferson County School District Board of Education members

While Jeffco educators would like to see school return to normal as much as parents and students do, we have a responsibility to speak up for our school and community safety.

Today we call on Jeffco Public Schools to cancel plans to reopen schools on August 24th for 100% in person instruction under the current Restart Jeffco guidelines.

The start of school should be online or be postponed until broader conditions improve and all stakeholders and Jeffco Schools can come together to agree on how to respond to rapidly changing COVID-19 conditions when deciding whether to resume in person instruction or resort to online instruction.

The reality is school health and safety IS community health and safety.

While Jeffco educators would like to see school return to normal as much as parents and students do, we have a responsibility to speak up for our school and community safety.

The Restart Jeffco plan as currently presented leaves too many questions unanswered for educators, parents, and students. The consequences are too high to rush back to in person learning. We need clear health and safety provisions that are missing from the Restart Jeffco plan.

We call upon Jeffco leadership to commit to a remote or delayed start for the 2020-2021 school year until there is time to include all stakeholders in further developing a plan which reflects the current rise in COVID-19 cases across our country and the state of Colorado.

Any plan development must prioritize health, safety, and transparency; provide a higher level of detail that answers questions about specific daily procedures that ensure student & staff safety; include educator expertise stakeholder voice, including parents, students and community members; and ensure equity for all.
