Ban Firearms on all University of Colorado Campuses
University of Colorado Board of Regents
To the University of Colorado Board of Regents,
We the undersigned urge you to change CU policy to ban firearms on all University of Colorado campuses.
The February 16th shooting deaths in the Alpine Village apartments on campus have devastated the UCCS community. This traumatic loss has shattered many students, faculty, and staff, and many are now moving through campus with new fears, uncertainties, and anger. This tragedy brought to light weapons policy that needs to be changed urgently. Research shows that more guns increase the danger of gun violence. It is time to make UCCS safer by banning guns on campus.
There is a common belief that the University of Colorado does not have the authority to ban concealed carry on its campuses. This is false: in 2021, a Colorado law was passed (SB 21-256), which allows for local governments, a category which explicitly includes “the governing board of an institution of higher education,” to create weapons policies that are stricter than prevailing state policies. This bill places the authority squarely with the Regents: it states that “officials of local governments are uniquely equipped to make determinations as to regulations necessary in their local jurisdictions.”
We call upon the Regents to exercise this authority immediately to ban firearms on all University of Colorado campuses.
