Big Oil rakes in profits while gas prices surge. Tax Big Oil billionaires.

Members of Congress

Oil companies are using the war in Iran as a pretext to raise gasoline prices and gouge consumers. The conflict has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway where more than 20% of the world's crude oil passes every day. Big Oil is making billions by keeping prices high, just like they did at the start of the war in Ukraine, and using those windfall profits to reward wealthy shareholders and enrich executives while everyday Americans see their costs rise. According to reports from The New York Times, Americans are now spending $200 million more a day on gasoline than they were just a week ago. It’s time to end Big Oil's stranglehold on our economy and national security and use their profits to help people struggling with high gas prices. Congress should pass a tax on excessive profits to stop Big Oil's profiteering, give back money to working families to cover healthcare, housing, and basic necessities, and usher in a new era of accountability on corporate greed.

It’s time to put an end to Big Oil’s profiteering. The industry has been leveraging the crisis in Iran to raise gas prices gouge consumers. At current prices, the average American family will pay over $900 more for gasoline this year compared to pre-war prices. If Congress had passed a windfall profits tax after Russia invaded Ukraine, analysts estimate the average American household could have received roughly $1,715 in relief. Congress can act now to stop oil profiteering and help protect Americans from the price shocks that come with fossil fuel volatility. A windfall profits tax would take some of the extraordinarily large profits made by fossil fuel companies in response to the war in Iran, return that money directly to American households, and discourage oil companies from artificially inflating gas prices. We urge you to stand with working people: start by passing a windfall tax that makes Big Oil pay a tax on their profits to fund checks for every American.
