Tell Boxer and Feinstein: Don't Punish Immigrants - Ditch the bill!

California Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein

News reports just came out revealing that California Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer could introduce a bill to force local law enforcement to collaborate with ICE agents.

You may have heard of a tragic death in San Francisco, allegedly committed by an immigrant man. Not surprisingly, Donald Trump and right wing politicians are using this single tragedy to harm everyone in our communities.

But you know what? Democratic Senators Boxer and Feinstein seem to be jumping on the bandwagon too!

362 counties, cities and states have decided that their communities are safer when local police and immigration agents are kept separate. And policies to keep them separate lead to greater trust of local police, making immigrants more likely to report crimes.

We fought hard to win these policies but Boxer and Feinstein could put them in jeopardy.

We have to act now.

Sign the petition: tell your California Senators to not use this single tragic case to further target and criminalize immigrant communities.

The petition could stop them from introducing a bill to harm immigrants and send a strong signal to other leaders - like Hillary Clinton - who’ve reacted to this tragedy by fanning the flames of fear.

We oppose any legislation which would force local law enforcement to collude with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE).

Such policies have been shown to undermine public safety for all and are devastating for immigrants and their families.

The National Journal reported that you are developing legislation that would mandate these wrongheaded policies, even when local government officials have decided to reject them.

Furthermore, multiple courts have found that such policies violate the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution.

Accordingly, 326 counties, 32 cities and four states have rightly created policies to uphold their residents’ Constitutional rights by limiting local law enforcement’s forced collaboration with ICE agents.

We call on you, and all policymakers, to abandon efforts to introduce or support legislation to force local law enforcement to collaborate with ICE.

We will vigorously oppose any bill which cynically takes advantage of a tragic situation to fan the flames of fear and harm the immigrant community.

Respectfully,
