Bring back the Beacon cleaners

Building and Land Technology

On June 1st, the entire cleaning staff of The Beacon in Jersey City illegally lost their jobs after speaking out about wage theft and lack of affordable healthcare during the coronavirus pandemic. The Beacon is a 1,155-unit apartment complex owned by Building and Land Technology.

Residential cleaners risk their own health to keep residents safe from COVID-19 by cleaning door handles and other surfaces. Yet Beacon cleaners were paid minimum wage and received no health benefits.

In April, Beacon cleaner Dario Cardenas passed away from COVID-19. Follow Dario's death, the remaining cleaners sent a petition to Building and Land Technology demanding fair pay and access to affordable healthcare. They also filed a complaint with Jersey City over the violations of a municipal standard wage law.

Just weeks later, Building and Land Technology switched cleaning providers and the new contractor, Adamas Building Services, refused to hire any of the cleaners.

As residents of The Beacon and of Jersey City, we call on Building and Land Technology to make sure that Adamas hires the fired cleaners.

Residential workers are essential workers, and it is unacceptable that cleaners working at The Beacon were fired after speaking out about lack of access to affordable healthcare during the coronavirus pandemic.
