Bring back the July 4th fireworks show at Almaden Lake

Santa Clara Valley Water District Board of Directors

For 6 years, over 25,000 people from across District 10 and San Jose attended the July 4th Fireworks Festival at Almaden Lake to safely celebrate our country's freedom and independence. The festival was unfortunately cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the pandemic wanes, Councilmember Mahan is eager to bring back this beloved community event in 2022. A key roadblock stands in our way, however. The Santa Clara Valley Water District is planning an Almaden Lake Improvement Project which will separate the man-made lake from the natural river.  Work on the project is planned to start in 2022 and continue through 2024, preventing the fireworks show from taking place in 2023 and 2024 and possibly even 2022.

Please join Councilmember Mahan and the District 10 Leadership Coalition in asking the Water District to coordinate the Almaden Lake Improvement Project in such a way as to allow the July 4, 2022 fireworks show to take place. After two years of an enduring pandemic, our community deserves to celebrate the 4th together.

Dear Board of Directors,

The July 4th fireworks show at Almaden Lake is a highly valued and beloved event that brings the community together to celebrate our freedom and love for our Country. It is an event that brings together people from all over San Jose and the surrounding areas, from different walks of life, where we celebrate as one nation and one community.

The past year and a half have been very difficult on our local community as the COVID-19 pandemic caused significant stress. Not only did many people lose their jobs, but they lost loved ones, and for many of us, our way of life has been altered forever. Depression, drug use, and youth suicide have all increased during the pandemic.

While this event attracts over 25,000 guests, it continues to be a family-safe alternative to other events as there is no alcohol allowed, and there have never been any arrests, unlike other local fireworks events. In addition, it reduces the use of illegal fireworks as many prefer to attend this exciting and fun event.

The District 10 Leadership Coalition, as well as the undersigned community members, join me in respectfully requesting that the Almaden Lake Improvement Project start date be coordinated in such a way as to allow the July 4, 2022 fireworks show to take place. Because the project will prevent us from having the event in 2023 and 2024, and because we could not have the event in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, the community is anxious to ensure that the 2022 show is allowed to take place as it has in the past.

Sincerely,
Councilmember Matt Mahan
