BU, Meet Our Needs

Melissa L. Gilliam, President, Boston University; Judi Burgess Assistant Vice President - Employee & Labor Relations, Boston University

Since July 2024, UAW Local 2324 has been negotiating a successor contract with Boston University. BU has dragged negotiations for almost two years, while denying union workers the fair wages needed to live and work in the Boston area.

In April during negotiations, BU refused to counter wage proposals made by the Union, insisting that the Union should bargain against itself.

BU’s total revenue in the year before our negotiations began was over $3 billion. In that same year, the University spent $17 million on consulting, over $72 million on construction - but still refuses to agree to fair wages!

Add your name to send a message to BU: The people who make this university run deserve a fair day’s pay for a fair days work. Our wages must keep pace with inflation.

We, the L.2324 represented employees of Boston University, call on you to make union workers whole. Union workers have sacrificed to keep the University running throughout a turbulent decade, and it is well past time they were compensated accordingly.

Fair wages. Union workers deserve wages that allow them to live stably in the city where they work. Union workers should not need second jobs or extensive overtime to scrape by in the city that gives this University its name.

Higher Starting Salaries. It is a travesty that in our current, expensive economy, wages for full time Union workers start as low as $18.88 an hour. Low wages contribute to the burnout and high turnover that harms our members and the University. Starting salaries for Union workers must be set with the goal of attracting and retaining talent.

Job Security and AI. AI implementation threatens workers and destroys communities within the University. That must stop. The implementation of AI is a historic opportunity to raise working standards instead of lowering them. Consult with Union workers on AI implementation to save communities and strengthen workplaces.

To remain as an industry leader, the University must do right by its workers with competitive pay, job security, and a fair contract.

In unity,
