Call for new road widening / building schemes in Bradford to be halted

City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council

Bradford Council and West Yorkshire Combined Authority are planning to spend £hundreds of millions on new road schemes here in Bradford.

We now know that the British public support a green recovery from the coronavirus crisis and instead of wasting vast amounts of money in un-green road building schemes, we should be investing in building a greener future for our city.

Bradford Green Party is joining local campaigners to ask Bradford Council to pause all new major road schemes across our District until their impact on our environment and air pollution has been fully assessed.

The West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) is now undertaking a Climate Impact Audit of some West Yorkshire road schemes in the pipeline.

We want ALL major road schemes in the pipeline for Bradford District - including the Tong Valley Road , widening of Tong Street and the Canal Road widening scheme between Shipley and Bradford - to be included in that process.

We ask Bradford Council:

- That all major Bradford District road schemes are included in the WYCA Carbon Impact Audit and are reviewed against the Climate Emergency declaration and CERP study.
- For a moratorium of all major road schemes in Bradford District until the full carbon impact can be determined.
- That Bradford Council abandons plans to build a new road through the Tong Valley and pledges to protect one of the last green spaces between Bradford and Leeds.
- That Bradford Council reconsiders all its proposed major road schemes with reference to its climate emergency commitment.
