Cancel Rent - Fully Fund, Fix & Clean NYCHA!

NYS Congressional delegation, Mayor de Blasio

A COVID-19 call to action in public housing

In order to minimize the deadly impact of this virus and provide healthy homes for the long term NYCHA must be fully funded, cleaned and fixed. Additionally, to support our families who have lost income and are struggling financially, rents must be fully suspended and forgiven across NYCHA for the duration of this crisis. The de Blasio administration must do the increased cleaning of “high touch” areas it has committed to, thoroughly and throughout all of its buildings, with proper cleaning supplies, which up until now has not fully happened. However, even that increased cleaning of high touch areas would not fully sanitize our buildings. The expansion of staff to levels necessary to fully clean our buildings, the repairs our buildings need, and the loss of rent money for the agency will require the federal government to not only bail out big corporations, but instead use our tax dollars to invest in our health.

The disinvestment in public housing was a disinvestment in our immune systems, just one example of the many forms of environmental racism that have led to the public health crises in our communities. Conditions like no heat and hot water, widespread toxic mold, asbestos and lead left us vulnerable to this virus, and our buildings now not being fully cleaned, only makes the situation more deadly. As our loved ones and neighbors are taken from us, we are more clear than ever that the federal government must correct past wrongs and re-invest in public housing.

Widespread job loss and increased expenses for our families who were already struggling economically, necessitate that rents be fully suspended throughout the crises and that the federal government fund that loss in income.

We demand NYS Congressional Delegation champion:

  1. $1 billion in emergency operating funds for staffing, equipment and supplies needed to fully sanitize our buildings.

  2. $40 billion in recovery capital funds to ensure that after this crises our homes get the repairs they desperately need

  3. Cancellation of all rents for the duration of the crises and a match in funding from the federal government to fill the gap.

Additionally, to support our families who have lost income and are struggling financially, rents must be fully suspended and forgiven across NYCHA for the duration of this crisis.
