Cancel the Homeland Defense Radar - Hawaii
US Congress
Congress must stop the funding and construction of a massive Pentagon Radar System on sacred Hawaiian lands for a missile defense system that doesn't work!
Background: The Pentagon was planning to build a 2 billion-dollar radar system on sacred Hawaiian ground for a Missile Defense System called the Homeland Defense Radar-Hawaii, (HDR-H) in 2020 but due to Native Hawaiian protest the project was stalled. The Pentagon did not fund the HDR-H in their version of 2021 defense budget, the National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, but due to lobbying efforts of Senators representing Hawaii, Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz, the HDR-H was put back into the Senate’s version of budget. The HDR-H is intended to use to track nuclear missiles in a Ground Based Missile Defense system that has never been proven to work but makes Hawaii a target from adversaries. The HDR-H, along with other missile weapon systems deployed in Hawaii are apart of Pentagon plans to ramp up military presence in Pacific to confront China.
In this time of grave economic uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and as unprecedented protests around the country are demanding that the government redirect spending from the police and military to more urgent social needs such as healthcare, education, and the environment, Congress must cut this wasteful, unessential, and dangerous weapon system from the NDAA.

We demand that Congress cancel and defund the HDR-H in the 2021 NDAA and pursue diplomatic strategies for resolving conflict in the Pacific.
The Pentagon defunded the Homeland Defense Radar-Hawaii (HDR-H) in the 2021 NDAA because the technology is obsolete and the construction, planned to be built on sacred Hawaiian lands, was met with fierce resistance from the local and Native community. However, senators representing Hawaii, Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz, lobbied to put the HDR-H back into the senate’s version of NDAA because of pressure from local businesses and military interests. THE HDR-H MUST BE CANCELLED! It is imperative that the Congress keep the HDR-H out of their mark up of the NDAA!
The HDR-H will not make Hawaii or US territories safer because the technology is insufficient to track nuclear and hypersonic missiles. The HDR-H makes Hawaii a greater target for US adversaries and will destroy ecosystems and desecrates sacred lands.
In this time of grave economic uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and as unprecedented protests around the country are demanding that the government redirect spending from the police and military to more urgent social needs such as healthcare, education, and the environment, we urge you to cut this wasteful, unessential, and dangerous weapon system from the NDAA.
DEFUND AND CANCEL THE HOMELAND DEFENSE RADAR IN HAWAII!
Sincerely,
