Tell the Northern R.I. Chamber of Commerce: Stop Obstructing Climate Action!
Northern R.I. Chamber of Commerce

Rhode Islanders want our businesses, large and small, to thrive. But the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce doesn't feel the same way about our children!
Left unchecked, climate change will ravage our state with flooding, heat waves, droughts, poor air quality, and disease. That's why 92% of Rhode Islanders support strong climate action.
But in 2021, the Northern R.I. Chamber of Commerce lobbied against the Act On Climate — the most vital climate bill in our state's history — just as it had opposed key earlier bills. After it was clear the bill was going to pass, they still tried to gut it, lobbying Governor McKee to make its pollution reductions optional instead of mandatory.
Now, in 2022, the Chamber's opposition to climate action continues. To meet the Act On Climate's goals, we know we must rapidly transition to clean renewable electricity. A bill to propel that transition — the 100% Renewable Energy Standard — has broad support at the State House. But yet again, the Northern R.I. Chamber is on record in opposition!

Dear President Catucci and NRICC Board Members:
The climate crisis is upon us: destabilizing our climate, endangering our most treasured places, and harming our health. The science has long been clear that in order to protect our children's future, we must rapidly reduce carbon pollution from burning fossil fuels.
That's why we are appalled that the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce has consistently lobbied against the bills that would reduce our state's pollution in line with what the science requires.
In 2021, you opposed the Act On Climate and worked to weaken it. And this year, your lobbyist Lenette Forry-Menard submitted testimony opposing the 100% Renewable Energy Standard.
The transition to a carbon-free economy is inevitable. We believe it will be an opportunity for positive growth for the economy of RI and for its businesses. Now that the Act On Climate is law, we call on the Chamber to pull back its attacks on efforts to implement it. The implementation of Act On Climate needs business support and engagement: the Northern RI Chamber must take a positive and proactive role, not reactive and oppositional.
For the sake of our children's quality of life, as well as the future of our state's economy, please rethink your opposition to climate action.
