Chuck Todd: Apologize for giving a platform to an antisemitic attack against Bernie Sanders

Chuck Todd

On MSNBC’s live broadcast yesterday, Chuck Todd, the moderator of Meet The Press, quoted an article by Jonathan Lass, calling online supporters of the Bernie Sanders campaign, “the digital brown shirt brigade” a reference to the paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party that helped Hitler rise to power in the 1920s and 1930s. Todd giving a platform to this comparison is not only unethical, but it is dangerous for Jews.

We need to draw the line here and hold Chuck Todd accountable. Using antisemitism to attack a candidate because you're afraid of their policies is horrific — even more so when the candidate is Jewish and has family that was murdered by the Nazis.

When the establishment erases the Jewishness of progressive Jews and cynically smear progressives with accusations of antisemitism, we distract from the violent antisemitism on the right and put all Jews in danger. We need to stop it right here and make it clear: the real threat to Jews is coming from the GOP, which has been emboldening white nationalists more and more every day.

And we know that Chuck Todd’s Jewishness doesn’t excuse the fact that he gave a platform to a statement painting the Sanders campaign as antisemitic. Right-wing Jewish leaders have contributed to a narrative undermining Bernie’s Jewishness; this narrative hurts all Jews alike. We have seen it in the attacks on Bernie’s lack of religiousness and his “disloyalty” to Israel: two attacks rooted in historical antisemitic tropes.

American Jews are in more danger than ever with the rise of white nationalism. You are minimizing the real threat of antisemitism by giving a platform to the description of online Bernie Sanders supporters with brown shirts. You giving a platform to this comparison here is not only unethical, but it is dangerous for Jews.

Apologize for giving a platform to this antisemitic description of Bernie Sanders’ supporters so we can refocus energy on fighting back against violent antisemitism that is incited by the GOP. Your Jewishness doesn’t excuse you giving a platform to a statement painting the Sanders campaign as antisemitic. You are responsible for your sources and for pointing to the real source of antisemitism: white nationalism.
