Claremont City Ceasefire Resolution Now!

Claremont City Council

Join Claremont community members in our call that Claremont City Council adopt and agendize a Claremont City resolution calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire amid Israel's ongoing genocide and humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza that has killed 28,000 Palestinians, nearly half of whom are children (Al Jazeera, February 10, 2024). Claremont must join the chorus of cities including Long Beach, San Francisco, Oakland, Hayward, Montebello, Richmond, and just recently, the city of Pomona in pressuring our congressional representatives to adopt H.Res.786.

Regardless of religion, race, nationality, or region, Claremont City Council has a responsibility to advocate for justice and safety for all its community members and their loved ones to the federal government. Claremont City Council has a responsibility to condemn all forms of anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, Islamophobic and anti-Semitic bigotry and racism. A ceasefire is a local issue when community concerns like houselessness, education, and healthcare are underfunded because of the billions we are giving to this genocide.

We, the undersigned, call upon Claremont City Council to pass a resolution that calls for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. Thousands of lives are at immanent risk if the U.S. does not pressure Israel to adopt a ceasefire. The US sends $3.8 billion to Israel every year, our taxpayer money that could be going into Claremont's schools, roads, medical clinics, parks, and community centers. A ceasefire is a local issue when community concerns like houselessness, education, and healthcare go underfunded because of the billions we give to this genocide. Anti-Palestinian, Anti-Arab, Anti-Muslim racism and anti-Semitic hate have increased exponentially since Israel intensified their decades-long collective punishment of Palestinians.

City government is our closest proximity to government power, and passing a ceasefire resolution will send a clear and direct message to our congressional representatives that their constituents want them to sign onto H.Res.786 which calls for an immediate and permanent ceasefire now!
