Clean Slate Can't Wait!
State Legislature
As progressives, we believe that everyone has inherent dignity and all people, including those who cause harm, are worthy of healing and love. It is so important for formerly incarcerated people rejoining their communities to have access to jobs, housing, education, and other basic life essentials that will allow them to thrive.
Our current laws make it very difficult for formerly incarcerated people to establish themselves after leaving prison. Because of their conviction records, they are regularly denied jobs, have trouble finding housing, and are prevented from accessing loans for higher education. This makes it nearly impossible for them to provide for themselves and their families and perpetuates the pattern of intergenerational trauma and economic instability. The Clean Slate Act serves to automatically seal conviction records so that all New Yorkers can move ahead and fully participate in their communities as thriving citizens.
