Closing Shutter Creek will make us less safe

Governor Kate Brown

In July 2020, Oregon AFSCME members fought back and were successful at stopping the legislature and Governor Brown from closing two minimum-security prisons. We were proud that all of our hard work had paid off. We were able to show the state that keeping prisons open and keeping small communities alive is what Oregonians wanted. Then at the end of 2020, Governor Kate Brown stated she was going to close them again.

As of May 2021, thanks to Oregon AFSCME members standing up and making their voices heard, Warner Creek is off the list of closures.

We now need your voice once again to show Oregon and elected officials that when they made that decision in July 2020 it was the right one. Closing Shutter Creek will make every corrections worker less safe and lead to overcrowding, more overtime and the loss of support for local communities.

The decision to keep Shutter Creek and Warner Creek Correctional Facilities open in July 2020 it was the right one. Closing Shutter Creek will make every corrections worker less safe and lead to overcrowding, more overtime, and a huge negative economic impact in the rural Southern Oregon coast.

Closures should never happen without thorough current and future capacity evaluations, community economic impact studies programming and transitioning opportunities and especially consideration of any safety concerns.
