Congress Must Pass a UBI
U.S Congress
We should all have a basic income.
Consider for a moment that from this day forward, on the first day of every month, around $1,000 is deposited into your bank account –because you are a citizen. This income is independent of every other source of income and guarantees you a monthly starting salary above the poverty line for the rest of your life.
What do you do? Possibly of more importance, what don’t you do? How does this firm foundation of economic security and positive freedom affect your present and future decisions, from the work you choose to the relationships you maintain, to the risks you take?
The idea is called unconditional or universal basic income, or UBI. It’s like social security for all, and has been embraced by Thomas Paine as well as political opposites like Milton Friedman and Martin Luther King, Jr.
For a multitude of converging reasons, it is being promoted now: Rising inequality, decades of stagnant wages, the transformation of lifelong careers into sub-hourly tasks, exponentially advancing technology like robots and deep neural networks increasingly capable of replacing potentially half of all human labor, world-changing events like Brexit and the election of Donald Trump – all of these and more are pointing to the need to start permanently guaranteeing everyone an economic floor under which they cannot fall.
Voice your support for a Universal Basic Income by adding your name to the petition.
The petition will be submitted to your representatives in the House and the Senate.

The economic crisis wrought by the COVID health crisis has demonstrated just how precarious our economy is. A sole reliance on job-generated income means local economies shut down when people can't work.
The situation we find ourselves in is a culmination of the inequities of our economic system for the last hundred years that has disproportionately rewarded the investors and has impoverished the producers. Congress must remedy this to make sure that the next, inevitable economic crisis doesn’t plunge more Americans into poverty. The way to do that is to enact a Universal Basic Income, where each person in our country is guaranteed a $1000 / month, no strings attached.
The people are the economy. We have built America into one of the wealthiest in human history. It is time for each of us to benefit from that work.
I demand that you support a UBI of $1000 per month and commit to fight for federal legislation that gives everyone an income floor to stand on. No one should be left behind, including your constituents.
