Congressman Moulton: refocus your push for change by backing the Green New Deal

Representative Seth Moulton

In this new political moment, we call on Congressman Seth Moulton to refocus his push for change and new leadership by joining the fight for the "Green New Deal" that our district, our country, and our planet need.

Increased flooding and other problems related to climate change are already harming our communities, and the latest National Climate Assessment makes clear that we must take action now. At the same time, people across the Sixth Congressional District of Massachusetts are struggling in an economy that just does not work for most of us.

The Green New Deal proposal put forward by Representative-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a way of attacking these problems with the urgency that is required, by linking investment in a just and rapid transition to a green, carbon neutral economy with the creation of living wage jobs and the mitigation of long-standing social inequities.

Dear Representative Moulton:

We are writing to ask that in this new political moment, you refocus your push for change and new leadership by joining the fight for the "Green New Deal" that our district, our country, and our planet need.

Specifically, we request that you endorse the proposal put forward by Representative-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to establish a Select Committee for a Green New Deal. We hope that you will also push your colleagues, including those seeking leadership positions, to do the same.

We agree with you that our district and our country desperately need change. But we worry that a call for change that is not clearly linked with progressive positions could be misused by groups seeking to push the Democratic Party away from the kind of bold, progressive policies we need. Therefore, we urge you to center your call for change on specific progressive policies that address the most pressing challenges faced by the people of our country and our district.

The Green New Deal is just that kind of policy. Increased flooding and other problems related to climate change are already harming our communities, and the latest National Climate Assessment makes clear that we must take action now. At the same time, people across the Sixth Congressional District of Massachusetts are struggling in an economy that just does not work for most of us.

The Green New Deal is a way of attacking these problems with the urgency that is required, by linking investment in a just and rapid transition to a green, carbon neutral economy with the creation of living wage jobs and the mitigation of long-standing social inequities.

In pushing this proposal forward, progressive new leaders -- including members of Congress and grassroots activists -- are exemplifying the type of leadership you have called for. We believe a Green New Deal is the kind of change worth fighting for, and we hope you will take this opportunity to join them.
