Continue to ensure cycling and walking provision when the Badminton Road motorway overbridge is demolished
National Highways and South Glos. Council
National Highways have informed residents and businesses that the A432 motorway overbridge on Badminton Road needs to be completely demolished and re-built. This is due to serious structural issues with the bridge itself that were identified following surveys of the bridge in the summer of 2023. The bridge closure has been in place for almost a year already and has caused massive disruption for local people and businesses. Fortunately, residents have still been able to walk and cycle across the bridge to access local amenities, bus services, and to travel to and from school or work. However, this is all due to change when the bridge is demolished later on in 2024.
This is because during the construction of the new bridge, National Highways and South Glos. Council have indicated that there will be no temporary provision for pedestrians and cyclists to cross in this location. This means that people will be totally cut off from schools, shops, work places, metrobus services as well as other local amenities – as people will be unable to walk and cycle across the bridge.
This total closure will be for a minimum of nine months and probably for much longer. If we are serious about active travel and encouraging residents to walk and cycle to school and to work etc, or to simply catch a bus into Bristol – then we call on National Highways and South Glos. Council to come up with some better provisions for walking and cycling to mitigate the impacts of the bridge closure. Please sign the petition to request National Highways consider local people and businesses.

We recognise that a new A432 motorway overbridge on Badminton Road is required to ensure the safety of both bridge and motorway users, and that this comes with inevitable disruption.
However, over the past year the continued provision of pedestrian and cycle access across the bridge has been a lifeline to local people. Many students living in Downend, Bromley Heath and Emersons Green use that route every day to travel to Winterbourne Academy, while many also travel in the other direction to Downend School. And many other local people use the bridge to visit family and friends, shops and to access the metrobus into Bristol. We don't want more people to be forced into their cars to take long detours and contribute to the congestion we already see on the ring road.
Please ensure that there are continued provisions for walking and cycling access when the bridge is demolished and keep that vital link between communities.
