In a telling and desperate bid to leave ‘a legacy’, Keir Starmer has insisted on announcing the Defence Investment Plan (DIP) before leaving office and before the Nato summit, committing an extra £15 billion to military spending.

Never mind the cost-of-living crisis or the collapsing services he leaves behind, Starmer wants to be remembered as the man who ramped up spending on weapons to record levels. Andy Burnham has since pledged to “take my responsibilities fully” to fund the DIP, including plugging a £4.7bn gap in the arms budget through cuts to other services.

The government is pushing through massive increases in 'defence' spending.

While the government fails to act over the climate crisis, it plans to spend 3.5% of national income by 2035 on the military, an increase of £35 billion per year. It is expected to fund this by cutting public services, social security and pensions.

We believe this must stop. The military budget will be spent on foreign wars which do not make us more secure and will only benefit arms dealers. Real security comes from decent jobs, pay and properly funded public services.
