CWRU: ICE OUT PETITION
President Kaler, Provost Ward, Vice President Apgar, and Case Western Reserve University administrators
We the students of Case Western Reserve University make these demands of you to protect our undergraduate students, graduate students, post-docs, faculty, staff, and community from the dangerous presence of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement in our community and the threatening possibility of their coming to our campus. We recognize your past efforts to prioritize the safety of our university community, especially our immigrant and international community. Student leaders have united behind a message and a mission to enact seven demands that will further protect our community. It is because we share an abiding concern for student safety and security that we come together to ask this of you:
- Inform the public of the policy of Case Western Reserve University towards ICE, either through email or a website page.
- Publicly state that ICE is not welcome on campus.
- Refuse all data sharing with ICE that is not legally mandated, and protect the private information of students and staff to the fullest extent of the law.
- Treat the presence of ICE on campus as a CRITICAL emergency, where all students will receive a SpartanSafe emergency alert through the established system.
- Deny ICE entry to campus buildings - If ICE is reported nearby, lock all campus buildings, just like any other emergency
- Refuse to sign the 287(g) agreement that deputizes campus police as immigration enforcement.
- Promote anti-ICE and legal observer training for students and faculty on campus.
It is of the utmost importance that we act immediately as a university to protect our community. We look forward to meeting with you to plan the next stages of discussion and implementation of policies that keep our campus community safe.
