BC Premier David Eby will soon expand what's called “involuntary treatment” — subjecting people to institutionalization without their consent, including in correctional facilities.

Expanding involuntary treatment is a knee-jerk reaction as the BC election approaches. With the public outrage swelling, all eyes are on Eby right now — and we have the opportunity to force the NDP’s hand. A massive petition could be what tips the scales and forces the government to lift up real solutions to the overdose crisis.

Will you sign the petition now calling on David Eby to commit to finding real solutions to the overdose crisis and say no to involuntary care in BC?

To BC Premier David Eby:

Your government has announced plans to soon expand involuntary treatment in BC — subjecting people to institutionalization without their consent, including in correctional facilities.

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association has called on you to walk your plan back because it fails to safeguard people's rights. Experts agree: there is no evidence that involuntary treatment helps people with mental health problems or addictions. Along with being deeply traumatizing, studies show it can lead to increased overdose risk and mistrust in healthcare.

The overdose crisis is a national epidemic and over six people are dying every day in BC. And involuntary treatment does not address the systemic causes. The evidence shows that real solutions include harm reduction practices such as safe supply, affordable housing and increased funding for mental health services, including voluntary treatment facilities.

What we need are real solutions to the overdose crisis — say no to involuntary care in BC.
