There are Gaps in Wealth, Education, Employment, Health, and more in Indianapolis!

Despite the Indianapolis efforts to address racial inequities, the region still has a lot of work to do to close the gaps and eliminate racial disparities in life outcomes for Black Indy.

We believe one key to creating a brighter future for Black Hoosiers is for our elected officials to develop and support laws and policies and engage in practices that have the potential to meet our needs and eliminate racial disparities.  

We need our legislators to address the barriers that keep us from thriving. This year, we are asking candidates how they will work to address disparities in housing, education, health care, and criminal justice systems and how they will protect our civil rights. More specifically, we asked:

  1. What are your plans for addressing the growing disparities in safe and affordable housing for all, especially for black and underserved communities?
  2. What is your plan for addressing the widening racial wealth gap in Marion County or the State of Indiana?
  3. What are your views on the ways to ensure Black people and other underrepresented groups have access to business capital?
  4. What is your plan to address inequitable health outcomes across all communities?
  5. What are your views on the ways to improve maternal health outcomes for Black women?
  6. What are your views on how to close the K-12 academic achievement gap?
  7. What are your views on how to create safe homes and communities for Black women?
  8. What are your views on the causes of community gun violence? What are your plans for addressing the root cause of community gun violence?
  9. What is your plan for reducing the incarceration rate for black residents ages 15-64?
  10. In your own words, what are diversity, equity, and inclusion?
  11. What are your thoughts about the overturning of Affirmative Action?
