DECLARE A STATE OF CLIMATE EMERGENCY IN RICHMOND, VIRGINIA

Richmond City Council, Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney

The global response to the COVID-19 pandemic has made it clear that when we take science seriously, the impossible becomes possible very, very quickly.

The UK, Canada, Ireland, Argentina, France, 15 national governments and 1,910 local governments (from NYC and San Fran to Kalamazoo and Frederick, Maryland) have already declared states of Climate Emergency. In 2019, Alexandria became the first city in Virginia to declare a state of Climate Emergency.

It is time for Richmond City to follow Alexandria's lead, declare a state of Climate Emergency, and then use that declaration to launch immediate actions towards a just transition.

Please include your City Council District in the comments, in addition to why declaring a Climate Emergency matters to you!

I am urging you to follow Alexandria's lead, and declare a State of Climate Emergency in the City of Richmond, and then use that Emergency status to accelerate a just transition to a decarbonized Richmond.
