DEMAND CPS ENERGY'S BOARD OF TRUSTEES KEEP FOSSIL FUELS IN THE GROUND

CPS Energy Board of Trustees

Demand CPS Energy Charts A Fossil-Fuel Free Future for our Power Supply!

For years, community members have been calling on our publicly-owned utility company to shut down the Spruce Coal Plant and move away from power generation that harms the people and the planet.

If the board takes CPS Energy's recommendation, our city will fail to meet our Climate Action and Adaptation Plan goals and further cause environmental harm by continuing to produce "natural" gas into 2065! This vote would go against the will of thousands of San Antonia's who have supported a just transition away from fossil fuels for our city.

Natural gas is anything but natural. In order to use methane gas as a source of power, it must be extracted from the ground and processed. This is typically done through a process called fracking, in which water, sand, and chemicals are injected into shale rock formations at high pressure in order to create fractures and release the methane gas. Fracking can contaminate air and water supplies. Pollutants, such as methane and benzene, can be harmful to human health if they are inhaled or ingested.

It's clear that methane gas is a toxic fuel. By avoiding Spruce's fracked gas conversion and permanently closing down our last remaining coal plant, CPS Energy can lower pollution, save lives and build a more renewable future for generations to come.

Sign onto our community letter demanding CPS Energy finally shuts down the Spruce Coal Plant and keeps fossil fuels in the ground by investing in renewable energy over fracked gas.

Dear Trustee,

For years, community members have been calling on our utility company to shut down the Spruce Coal Plant. Finally, CPS Energy and the Rate Advisory Committee have completed a resource planning process that will direct the future of our power supply.

With the urgency of the climate crisis and the health of our community members on our minds and the advancement and declining costs of clean energy technology, we call on the board of trustees to reject further fossil fuel expansion. Ratepayers, especially our working class families, can no longer be forced to pay the high cost of volatile natural gas prices. I’m asking you to vote for Portfolio 6 to ensure a sustainable future for our community.
