Democratic leaders Pelosi and Schumer failed to protect the DREAMers during recent budget negotiations and are now failing to protect the most vulnerable among us. They would seek to blame the President for the abuses against immigrants and the undocumented, yet they have been in Congress for nearly 70 years combined. When it comes to satisfying those who contribute to their campaigns, bipartisan deals are struck, yet when it comes to protecting poor, nonwhite families— both Pelosi and Schumer have disappointed.
We need leaders of the Democratic Party to actually lead or step aside and let those with courage fight for our future. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was created as a reaction to fear during a troubling moment in our history. It is increasingly clear that forming ICE is a mistake and history will judge us complicit in crimes against humanity. That Democrats allowed ICE to fall into the hands of an authoritarian, racist President should be shame enough to correct the course of our country.
American Patriots from coast-to-coast have taken to the streets demanding that ICE be abolished, yet Democratic leadership is slow and fearful in their response. We must return the immense power of protecting our borders to more accountable agencies who served our country for centuries. While we need vast reforms in our immigration system one solution is clear and has momentum.
We must be bold in our action calling for nothing less than the abolishment of ICE.
We demand that Democratic leaders Pelosi and Schumer write legislation to abolish ICE or write letters of resignation and let the people of the Democratic Party pick our next leaders, not by choosing who fundraises the most, but by those who would risk everything to ensure we can all realize the promise of America.
